In recent years the Shaw area of Washington D.C. has experienced redevelopment which has resulted in the displacement families with generational community roots. Having served the Shaw community for nearly 115 years, New Bethel Baptist Church (“NBBC”) understands changing community dynamics and the intricacies of establishing a healthy community even among diverse community interests. LightPoint was founded in 2014 as an extension of the Outreach Ministries of NBBC to support holistic community growth and inclusive development. Through community collaboration, LightPoint specializes in providing wraparound services and facilitating community engagement that facilitates economic stability for families and meaningful community participation.
In only two years, LightPoint has successfully served its Shaw residents and others living in the DMV area. LightPoint’s highlights include the following:
Partnered with the Greater Washington Urban League to serve more than 400 homeless families in the DMV area via a blanket and toiletry drive
LightPoint hosted its first annual Charity Golf Classic and collected over $10,000 to fund its Summer Enrichment Program for local youth and provide scholarships for three graduating seniors attending four-year institutions
LightPoint launched a Summer Enrichment Program for low to moderate income families. Participants ages 5-16 engaged in an assortment of age appropriate learning modules that complemented school curriculum and incorporated golf lessons, character development, and health and wellness activities in addition to its core curriculum.
September 2019 – National Recovery Month – LightPoint launched Project 360, the objectives were to have (a) Community Participants will understand local and national trends surrounding Opioid Use and Fatalities including the role of naloxone (b) Community Participants will understand local prevention policy highlighting the Live.Long.DC Strategic Plan, and (c) Community Participants will understand the role of the black church in ensuring prevention and recovery surround substance abuse and misuse.
